Greetings, Readers!
It’s been quite some time since I’ve been down to San Diego (here, here and here), but on the weekend like we just had here on the west coast, I couldn’t imagine a better time to return.
The initial reason for the trip was to hand off my entries for the National Homebrew Competition at the Ballast Point Homebrew Shop, but while I was in town, I thought I might as well stop for a sandwich.
Starting the trip off with a few samples from Ballast Point, I spent some time looking up incredibly rated sandwiches in the area. The one place that stood out was Rubicon Deli, a sandwich spot in a small pocket of restaurants along the 5 freeway.
Chatting with the guys who worked at this Rubicon location, I was pointed in the direction of the Rich Boy sandwich, an offering packed with chicken. Now while I don’t typically order chicken sandwiches as I feel they can sometimes be boring, the zeal with which this was recommended meant I had to try it.
The first warning for Rubicon has to do with the size of the sandwich. I ordered the half sandwich because the “whole” sandwich is on something the size of a full loaf of bread. It’s massive, but with the deliciousness that follow, it would be worth getting and enjoying for dinner as well…and breakfast the next morning.
The Rich Boy is stacked with grilled chipotle chicken, Monterey Jack cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomato, onion and Garlic Tabasco Mayo. You have your choice of bread, but really the Jalapeno and Cheese was the way to go for this.
I like crispy baked cheese on the top of bread. What can I say?
The chicken was juicy, flavorful and had a little of blackened flavor with the chipotle kick. The avocado, lettuce, tomato and onions added a freshness to the sandwich that complemented the rich and savory chicken and jack cheese.
The jalapenos on top of the bread and Garlic Tabasco mayo gave the sandwich a slow burn underneath it all that gave incredible depth to the sandwich.
It’s obvious why so many people talk up Rubicon Deli in San Diego, because if any of the other sandwiches are this good (and I sampled their Crandie which is also awesome), then you’re in for a real treat no matter what you try here.
The free chocolate chip cookie on the side was a nice touch as well.
So, Readers, while I wait to hear the results of the National Homebrew Competition, I will continue to dream about the Rich Boy, and tell you to try it for yourselves the next time you’re in San Diego. You’ll be glad you did.
Until next week…
Rich Boy
