Friday Brewday: Modern Times
Greetings, Readers!
It’s that time again! It’s been a long week for all of us, so let’s kick up our feet, crack open a craft beer, and enjoy the new Friday Brewday!
This week’s Brewery visit comes from my recent trip to San Diego. Modern Times Brewery has quickly become one of my favorites since they started shipping their beer to the LA area.
One of my favorite beers that they make is a hoppy tropical wheat beer called Fortunate Islands, which they say “tastes like wizards”, and I would have to say that’s a fairly accurate description.
While it is a very hoppy beer, it’s not too incredibly bitter. It’s more about the flavor and the aroma of the hops quickly taking you away to a beautiful, sunny, beach on a remote island in the Pacific.
So that’s what I buy the most when I’m at my local beer shop, but when I’m in SD I have to try everything they have on tap and this time that meant drinking a full glass of City of the Dead.
Awesome name, right? Well this amazing beer is an export stout that is brewed with their own house-roasted bourbon barrel-aged coffee.
Yeah, these guys roast their own coffee too (PS – picked a bag up for myself while there too and it’s top notch).
This stout is smooth, rich, delicious and a big win for anyone who loves coffee with the delicious roastiness and no bitterness that can sometimes be associated with roasted coffee. I’ve had it in bottle before, but to have it on tap was a step above. Definitely make this a pick to sip on when you visit the brewery.
I also had their Fruitlands Apricot Gose, Iron Sunrise IPL and Modern Times Ice (Pilsner) all delicious offerings to enjoy on tap.
The brewery at Point Loma is a warehouse setting that still feels very home-y with friendly staff, a relaxing atmosphere and one giant wall covered in comic books, the other a mosaic made with Post-It notes.
If you are able to make it to San Diego sometime, you should absolutely make this a stop on your trip and enjoy all of their fantastic beers. If you can’t, and you’re within their distribution area, I’d highly recommend anything they put out as they offer amazingly delicious craft beer that is expertly created.
Until next Friday, readers…
