I hope the start of fall finds you encased in a pumpkin-flavored cocoon of goodness. Candles, coffee, cookies, pancakes, soap, is there nothing left to not make with the smell of fall sweets?
Well, let’s step back for a moment, a few days in this case, to the waning moments of Summer.
Ah yes, the summer. Hot as hell here in Los Angeles, but filled with the cries of children and adults after eating too much fried food.
I of course am talking about the Los Angeles County Fair.
So Long, Heart Health
I’ve gone to the LACF a number of times in the past for a fun afternoon of walking, playing games, riding the Ferris Wheel, and of course eating. It seems that with each year there’s another most-talked-about food item whether it be Deep Fried Kool Aid (awesome) or Chocolate Covered Bacon (amazingly awesome).
Deliciously made guacamole dip is balled, battered and tossed into a deep fryer, giving a little crispness to a mild batter, with all the greatness of cilantro, tomatoes, and avocado warmed up on the inside. It’s a great treat to try, and topped with some ranch dressing is incredibly delicious.
I know. I know. I may have lost some of you with that item, but trust me. At any state or county fair, the best thing to do is find where the long lines are at and just dive into the fair food.
You can go back to salads and healthier eating tomorrow. Today, it’s all about living on the culinary edge.
Enter the Street Dog.
It was still summer after all, and with the hours of the season ticking away, what better sendoff to hellish heat is there than a delicious LA Street Dog?
A Los Angeles Institution
Heading to The Dog House (different from The Dog Haus in Burbank) I picked up a Street Dog, the delicious specialty of sidewalk vendors at 2am in Los Angeles. A beer dog, wrapped in bacon, and topped with onions, this is one of my favorite things to eat.
And thankfully at the Fair, I could count on at least a Health Department Rating.
But honestly, that hasn’t stopped me from buying one outside of a bar after a night of drinking.
The flavors of a Street Dog, beef frank and crispy bacon with the bite of chopped onions, is something that needs to be savored more often. I highly suggest you try these at home if you can’t find a reputable place to make them, as they will quickly become a favorite of yours as well as all of your summer barbecue guests.
Back For More?
Like I said, the Fair is for trying anything and everything. Deep fried or chocolate covered, all Fair food is an exercise in exploration. Most of it really should be considered the work of a Dr. Frankenstein-level of mad scientist, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be delicious.
But before you do, take it from me, a Fair Veteran, find something delicious and enjoyable to serve as a buffer between your stomach and all of that deep-fried goodness. In terms of the LA County Fair, you can never go wrong with a Street Dog.
Until next week, Readers…
