Greetings, Readers!
You know, fairly often people come up to me in the street and say “Hey, you, Sandwich Man, I’ve got a place you should try.”
Street. Work. One of those places.
Regardless, people tell me of places all the time, and in the past few months the word that most people have been saying is DogHaus.
Located right across the street from Warner Brothers in a seldom traveled part of Burbank, DogHaus is a true hidden gem of hot dog greatness. While I did consider getting a burger, or the Pig Lebowski ( a Polish sausage with fries stuffed in it), I decided to go with an LA inspired classic: The Downtown Dog.
The all-beef skinless dog is wrapped in smoked bacon and topped with caramelized onions, roasted bell peppers, mayo, mustard and ketchup. It’s exactly like the hot dogs you can get outside of a bar or concert sold on the corner, except with the knowledge that this one won’t potentially kill you.
The one thing that really struck me was the roll. Not a typical white bread or potato hot dog roll, this one was made out of the connected and grilled King’s Hawaiian rolls.
Seriously, this aspect blew my mind. The roll had incredible texture and sweetness which was a great complement to the savory beef and smoky bell peppers, and stood out above other hot dogs using standard rolls.
Note to self: this summer I must pick up Hawaiian rolls for my own grill sessions.
Add to the greatness of this sandwich their incredible beer selection and you’ve got a great lunch experience coming your way. Modern Times Beer is available in cans (Blazing World is an excellent pairing for this hot dog) and Angel City is on tap, either brewery is a great choice for lunch.
Make sure you add on some fries at the very least. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, you might finish those before you finish the hot dog.
Even though their tagline is “The Absolute Wurst” don’t let that play on words fool you. This place is fantastic and well worth seeking out this not-often-visited corner of Burbank.
Until next week, Readers…

[…] With sausage sandwiches that I’ve had before, I expected one sausage on a sliced roll, but I was greeted instead with two full bratwursts sliced lengthways and splayed out between two halves of a pretzel roll. It was a more filling and experience than I expected, with each bite bursting with smoked sausage and smooth beer infusions. […]
[…] Well, let’s step back for a moment, a few days in this case, to the waning moments of Summer. […]
