Deep In The Heart Of Texas
Greetings, Readers all the way from…well, Studio City, California.
Not exactly Texas.
Not even Tex-ish.
I’ve lived in the vicinity of Studio City, mainly in North Hollywood, for most of my 8+ years in Los Angeles. It’s a great area, and one I hope to stay in for a long time to come.
That being said, there are a ton of places I’ve passed by on a near daily occasion that I have never stopped in to try.
Take for example Texas Best BBQ. This place is literally a mile from the apartment I’ve lived in for almost five years and yet I haven’t stopped in until recently after a friend told me about how good their barbecue was.
So, looking at the flier included with his meal, I decided it was time.
Texas. Studio City. They’re kind of close…
The meats available here are tri-tip, pulled pork, smoked chicken and even a pork sausage sandwich, but let’s be honest here: I had to go with the brisket.
Look, I know what I like, and this sandwichologist enjoys smoked brisket.
For the sides I picked up the mac and cheese and the potato salad and headed home to enjoy.
What’s great about Texas Best is that they don’t add on the barbecue sauce for you, instead adding it with your order in two to-go cups. This allowed me to add on as much or as little as I wanted, and maybe even go for a little dipping as well.
The sauce was a delicious, smoky and tangy sauce that went well with the savory brisket which was tender, flavorful and a little bit smoky. It fell apart with each bite, and plenty of meat was stocked up within the roll.
Really, it’s excellent brisket, and with the option for control over the sauce level, this sandwich is great.
No add-ons, no extras. Just meat, sauce, bread.
And about that bread? Sure it’s just a regular long roll, nothing special, no flavor additions. It does the job and helps the meat get all up in your mouth.
Which, with this brisket, you need it in your mouth as fast as possible.
Sides Makes The Meal?
The mac and cheese is super cheesy and incredibly savory, but not overpowering. The potato salad is filled with big chunks of potato in this mayonnaise based salad that has good flavor without being overpowering. The sides are great, but ultimately don’t take away from the delicious brisket.
Though next time, I think I’ll definitely switch one of those out for some delicious corn bread.
So Texas Best BBQ is just another example of the conundrum of Los Angeles: How do you possibly keep up with all of the good eateries in the city when you can so easily miss great spots in your own neighborhood?
Well, now Readers I am going to have to try and keep my eyes open better now in my own neighborhood.
Who knows what else we could all miss out on?
Until next week, Readers…
